How will grades be calculated?
Unfortunately, you are no longer sitting your exams and will be graded based on the assessments of your teachers. As you might be aware, the government has released more information about how this will work out and what the assessment criteria will be.
To start with the basics, the schools will base their decisions on your work from previous classwork, bookwork, mock exams and previous examination results. Furthermore, they will also consider the progress review data and participation in any of the classes such as music, drama and PE. Regardless of whether your assignment is complete or not, you will also be given marks for your performances.
However, these are not the only factors that will lead to your assessment result. In fact, a crucial point in determining your results will be the ranking scheme that is embedded within the assessment process. Teachers, based on their assessments, will rank the students and the schools will be required to submit a rank order along with a centre grade for each student.
After collecting the individual assessments for all students (i.e. grades and rank orders), the exam boards will run a process to standardize the student grades across the country. For this purpose, the boards will first determine the profile of each school using a variety of factors such as grades or exam scores from previous years. Using this information, they will adjust the grades for every student in order to ensure that nobody is graded unfairly.
The schools are given at least five weeks to prepare the centre grades and the rank orders. During this period, if you have any questions, you can contact me through my email. I will do my best to help you out.
Good luck to everyone who will take GCSE this year. I wish the best for you all…
